Check Out the nobody fitness Home Gym, aka The Workout Bunker!

Writer's picture: Matt ManningMatt Manning

It's a lot of stuff crammed into a small space! I've had most of this equipment for almost 20 years, but still chose to mainly work out at gyms for a variety of reasons. The home workout room was mostly used as a place to coach my son in weightlifting, but it's been my sanctuary throughout the pandemic!

I actually have more equipment (combo Smith machine/squat rack and a few other things) that won't fit in this space. I'm hoping to build a bigger workout room in our barn someday, but who knows when I'll get around to that!

I am not someone who does well (understatement) when I don't work out consistently. I also hate body weight workouts! I am so thankful I had this outlet available to me. My heart goes out to all the people who are wired like me (a little obsessed with working out) who didn't have access to a gym or home equipment! I would have gone a little crazy without this stuff!

Enter The Workout Bunker! - As you can see in the mirror (furnace and water heater) it's actually the utility room in our basement! The Iso Lat Row Machine in the corner is over the sump pump. And the water softener (not pictured) is in front of the Seated Calf Raise!

Dumbbells - 3 lbs through 70 lbs. I have handles to assemble heavier dumbbells (up to 120 lbs), but unfortunately I just don't use the really big weights anymore. Don't get me started or I will cry. I used to be a lot stronger when I was younger and fatter! I got these dumbbells back in 2003 at Dick's Sporting Goods. They had all their weight plates and dumbbells on sale for a ridiculously cheap price per pound (it was either 20 or 40 cents per pound, but I can't remember now)! I'm kicking myself for not buying even more back then!

AB Straps - I love hanging leg raises because they hit the lower abs really well. I'd been looking for a power tower (I love those too), but I couldn't find a good deal on one that was actually in stock! I found these ab straps on Amazon for $12 for the pair! Oh, the curl bar was another great deal on Amazon for $23!

Accessories and Bands - The band set is pretty crappy so I can't recommend it, but for $16 it does the job and is a nice change of pace sometimes.

Seated Calf Raise - Love doing calves! I just wish they would grow a little for all the effort I put into doing them! They get stronger, but they just don't grow much! Genetics can be a bitch sometimes!

Iso Lat Row Machine - I think this was from 2003. I love this thing! I like doing rows one arm at a time to really concentrate on each side and also reduce stress on my lower back.

You can also see the Trap Bar or Hex Bar hanging by the wall. I call it a Hoop Bar, but I just make up names for things sometimes. That thing is awesome! I had to give up squats and dead lifts due to arthritis in my lower back many years ago, but that bar allows me to do dead lifts without killing my back! Oh, and it was only $70 on Amazon!

Lat Pulldown Machine - I think I got this in 2002. All the dark gray machines and benches, I bought from a guy at church along with lots of weights and some bars! It was a ton (almost literally) of stuff for $400.

Here's what I remember from the deal:

  • Combo Smith Machine / Squat Rack

  • Lat Pulldown Machine with Handles and Low Row Pulley

  • Adjustable Bench

  • Preacher Curl Bench

  • Decline Ab Bench

  • Olympic Bar

  • Olympic Plates (400+ lbs)

  • Standard Plates (300+ lbs)

Pec Deck Machine - I mostly use this for back and rear delts. I do Rear Delt Flyes, where I sit facing the seat. I also do Standing 1 Arm Lat Rows. Pretty sure it was from 2003.

Adjustable Bench - I use this for so many things. It's actually too high for my short legs, so when I get a chance I'm going to lower it by about 3 inches.

Preacher Curl Bench - I never do curls of any kind, but that's just me. I keep this around for doing behind the head dumbbell triceps presses, where I sit on the seat with my back to the arm rest.

Leg Attachment - I love Lying Leg Curls!

Wall Mounted Cable Machine - I don't have this yet, but it just shipped and will get here next week! It's been on back-order for months! I am just a little excited (yes, understatement) to get it! So many uses and a really good deal for $165 from Titan Fitness!

IT HAS ARRIVED! I've only used it once so far, but I'm loving it! I did Standing Rear Delt Flyes and it was just like being back in a gym.

It's supposed to be mounted to a wall. It has brackets at the top and bottom. But I'm all out of wall space in my tiny room, so I mounted it using the top bracket only. It feels plenty solid to me. Maybe one day when/if I build a workout room in the barn, it will finally get a wall of its own!

Stationary Bike - Not sure what this is for, but it looks fitness-y so I keep it around!

Thanks for dropping by! Have a great day!
